Honoring Denver Yoga Teachers: Chris Muchow

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Today, I went to Chris Muchow’s Anusara-Inspired yoga class at 9am at Kindness Yoga in Denver.

There are so many things I love about Chris’s classes that it’s hard to focus on just a few. Ironically, focus is one of Chris’s greatest gifts as a teacher. His ability to hone in on a pointed theme, coupled with precise alignment, makes every class an incredible learning experience.

Chris’s yoga class today focused on meeting your edge with compassion. His physical focus on arm balances carried this theme perfectly since so many of us face our edge when we surf gravity on our mats. As always, Chris added another layer of depth to this theme by honing our attention on firing up our calves to bring more extension and stability to challenging arm balances like Astavakrasana and Tittibhasana.

Every pose Chris chooses in his classes reveals profound insights about optimal alignment. Furthermore, each cue he uses invites us into a more nuanced and elegant understanding of the poses. Somehow, Chris maintains this steady attention to the details of our alignment, while also integrating the heart of his theme succinctly and sweetly.

When I leave Chris’s yoga class, I literally feel the teachings integrated into my body. My muscles and bones absorb the teachings not only of the alignment, but of the heart. The fire in my calves hugs my shins in a compassionate embrace and supports my journey towards my edges, my challenges, my fears. This is the magic of Chris Muchow’s class: weaving the asanas through the body, straight into the heart.

How has precise alignment in a yoga class brought you closer to your heart?

Honoring Denver Yoga Teachers: Patrick Harrington

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Yesterday, I took Patrick Harrington’s lunchtime Vinyasa class at Kindness Yoga in Cherry Creek.

The first word that comes to mind when I think of Patrick’s class is community.

More than any other teacher I know, Patrick weaves a supportive, loving community together in his classes and in his life off the mat. From the moment I walk in the door of the studio, Patrick makes me feel like I’m coming home. Every person is met with the same generosity of spirit and warmth of heart that exudes through Patrick’s words and actions. Outside of his yoga classes, Patrick creates that same sense of togetherness in all of the work he does – bringing together new people and new ideas to create something bigger, better and more beautiful.

The power of this community reverberated in yesterday’s yoga class. Before class, students hugged, chatted and caught up on each other’s lives. As we got moving and began sweating through a vigorous sequence, we smiled at each other, giggled, and encouraged each other on. Patrick acknowledge each of us by name throughout the class, highlighting our strengths. The most physically challenging moments of the class were lightened by an atmosphere of unwavering support and affection.

Closing class yesterday, Patrick said, “As you go back out into the laboratory, know that Kindness has got your back.” This community, he said, is here for each you with its smiles and support. In every yoga class with Patrick – in fact, in every interaction with Patrick – I feel completely held in that knowledge. The strength of the Kindness Yoga community invites me to open up completely to my full potential, knowing that, when I wobble or fall, I’ll be lifted right back up.

How does your yoga community help you thrive?

And, if you’re fortunate enough to have taken a yoga class with Patrick Harrington, share what you loved!

Blessings of love to my friend and teacher, Patrick Harrington!
